A Taste of Harmony
Website: http://www.tasteofharmony.org.au/
With one in four workers coming from overseas, there has never been a more important time to acknowledge and celebrate Australia’s diverse workforce. A Taste of Harmony is an annual event that provides Australian workplaces with the opportunity to celebrate the diversity in their workforce. In 2012 A Taste of Harmony will take place sometime in March.
Funded by the Scanlon Foundation, workplaces are asked to register and then organise a lunch or afternoon/morning tea and encourage workers to bring a dish that represents their cultural background or from a culture they might not have tried before. At the event workers are encouraged to share stories of their cultural background.
Given Australia’s 22 million people come from more than 230 different countries we know there is plenty of great dishes to introduce and stories to share!
Australian Institute of Family Studies: Overview of Islamic family law
Website: http://www.aifs.gov.au/afrc/pubs/newsletter/frq016/frq016-4.html
This paper provides a brief overview of key aspects of Islamic family law as it relates to divorce. A companion piece in Family Relationships Quarterly 15 discussed the diverse application and significance of Muslim family law and focused on aspects of shariah law as it relates to marriage. Both articles aim to provide a contextual framework for practitioners working with Muslim families in the family relationship services sector. Box inserts appearing throughout the article outline and contrast family law as it applies in Australia, providing some insight into the gulf navigated by Australian Muslims in regulating relationships within the context of a secular society.
Community Safety Action Guidelines
Pictorial action guides have been developed for culturally and linguistically diverse communities to help them understand the risks associated with natural hazards that may occur in Australia. They aim to help individuals and communities build an understanding of what could happen and how best to be prepared to minimise any adverse effects. Emergency phone numbers are provided on each guide.
The guides will be available on the Emergency Management in Australia website, www.ema.gov.au. For further information, email communities@ag.gov.au.
