Women Case Studies

Abstract: Settlement itself is a challenging process and the new arrivals face a number of issues brought on by isolation due to language and culture barrier in a new environment. The formation of the support groups meet their specific needs in psychological support, especially in group activities. The target group is Bhutanese women of ages 21-85 who need culturally sensitive support. The mix in ages is meaningful as the women enjoy the mutual friendship and close cultural bond. The single younger women need the support of the older experienced women while the older women enjoy their company. They grow and learn side by side.

Abstract: The Burmese Community Governance Project aimed to
• build cohesiveness amongst the different small groups
• use the knowledge and skills of the few older established members
• Provide education to the key members including women and young people on democratic practice, equal opportunities, legal obligations, ethical considerations
• Develop, write and register a Constitution
• Elect an interim Management Committee
• Organise activities for their community to enhance settlement
• Participate in broader community activities and events
• Take up volunteering and work experience to further their employment pathways
