24-Jun-2009   Bhutanese Women’s Advocacy group

Abstract: Settlement itself is a challenging process and the new arrivals face a number of issues brought on by isolation due to language and culture barrier in a new environment. The formation of the support groups meet their specific needs in psychological support, especially in group activities. The target group is Bhutanese women of ages 21-85 who need culturally sensitive support. The mix in ages is meaningful as the women enjoy the mutual friendship and close cultural bond. The single younger women need the support of the older experienced women while the older women enjoy their company. They grow and learn side by side.

28-Oct-2009   Young People Actively Engaged

Abstract: When young refugees arrive in Australia they face a number of challenges. They need to begin a new life, establish new friends and networks and find pathways that link them into mainstream community.

The MRCSA Youth Empowerment Program has advocated for and provided a voice for the inclusion and participation of young people of refugee background. Young people need to be engaged at all levels to ensure that they develop a belief in themselves as citizens with a valuable contribution to make to their communities.
