Housing Options for Newly Arrived Refugees
Date Submitted : 02-Mar-2010
Themes : Housing, refugees, Victoria, newly arrived
This research project has been undertaken by graduates from the Department of Human Services as a learning exercise. The report finds that refugees face a number of barriers to obtaining secure and suitable housing. These barriers include lack of employment, lack of rental history and references, low English proficiency, financial limitations and discrimination. Insecure tenure was also found to be an issue which causes housing instability and frequent moves, disrupting refugees’ settlement experience.
