Chatterbox Youth Program
Chatterbox Program is designed for those with low levels literacy. It facilitates connection between young people.
Young people from new and emerging communities have very high levels of unemployment and underemployment. One of the objectives is to prepare young people to navigate a pathway into the workforce.
The target group was young people 12-25 y.o. within the first two years of arrival. Most are also seeking their first job.
The employment training package focuses on resume writing workshops, basic literacy skills, customer service, online job-search and use of the internet, communication skills, teamwork and other relevant information. Information sessions also included: how to do an online application, opportunities for volunteering and work experience and referrals to other services including TAFE and jon network providers.
The primary findings was that young people required an informal opportunity where they could learn about how to become ’job ready’. While the Chatterbox sessions were all structured to include formal information there was ample opportunity to have a chat amongst themselves. This opportunity allowed the young people to talk about any concerns that they may have and to also share opportunities and good news stories.
The next stage will include a refinement of the “Chatterbox”. A formal evaluation will also be completed which includes self assessment. The aim is to grow the program over the next twelve months. Boys only and girls only chatterbox groups may be trialled in the next six months.
